SCOPE - The Student-led Conference on Polar Environment
SCOPE was initialised by student representatives from SFU (bioCEED at UNIS) in 2021. In 2022 SCOPE was supported by bioCEED and iEarth, with their support SCOPE 2022 became a larger event then last year. We want to continue this for the third SCOPE conference in 2023. The idea is still the same SCOPE is a conference for students organized by students. By having a conference for students only, students need to step up, take responsibility, and become a more active part of the conference and the learning environment. At SCOPE students will share their own experiences and work on ideas together.
SCOPE aims to engage students in their educational programs and to create a network between students affiliated with UNIS, Norwegian universities, and international institutions. Guests from Svalbard Folkehøgskole have been invited to attend and engage with the university students. For many of the students, SCOPE will be the first real experience with presenting at a conference. SCOPE will empower students to share their experiences and motivate each other in further activities. SCOPE is the perfect place to create an innovative learning environment for students to become more actively engaged. Moreover, two keynote speakers will contribute with interdisciplinary presentations relevant to the students, broaden their horizons, and motivate them for a further academic evolution. The first day will be completed with a conference dinner and networking evening. The second day of the conference we continue with a more engaging presentations and we end (most likely) with an open-door event.
The overarching objective of SCOPE will be: Contributing to the exchange between students about their projects, studies and interested that are tackling polar topics. With a wide range of educational services situated at 78° North in our town, we hope to become a bridge between different stages professional orientation and a platform for lowkey information exchange as well as skill development.
